Creamy Superfood Chocolate Smoothie

Smoothies are one of my favourite breakfasts.

It’s what I have during the week to start my day right, and it keeps me full and happy until lunchtime (which is key, as I’m horrible when I’m hangry!) I used to have full blown breakfasts and sometimes be super hungry by lunchtime, even if I often felt full after my breakfast. With smoothies though, I feel they nourish me more and I can keep on going for longer without having to reach for a mid-morning slump snack. Love ’em, and love ’em even more when they mean I can have dessert and chocolate for breakfast!

One of my favourite things about this smoothie (besides the flavour) is how full of goodness it is! Since they’re so many delicious flavours going on, the spinach goes by unnoticed, so if you’re new to the whole green smoothie thing, then this is most definitely going to suit you!

We’ve also got cacao, which is an amazing superfood and as it has (some) caffeine and is full of antioxidants. The lucuma and mesquite powders are a superfoods from Peru. Mesquite has a caramel-like taste (so yum!) and is high in calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc, as well as the amino acid lysine. Lucuma is known as the Gold of the Incas (need I say more?) and is high in fibre, vitamins, and minerals and has a citrusy flavour.

So what I’m basically saying is, I’m in love with smoothie, and I know you will be too!

This superfood chocolate smoothie is incredibly delicious and packed full of goodness! It's an amazing way to start the day, and it actually makes me want to jump out of bed for it. You can even make a big batch in the morning and enjoy it again later in the day if your sweet tooth calls for it!

Recipe type: Smoothie, Breakfast
Serves: 2
Ingredients
  • Half a papaya (200g without the skin and seeds)*
  • 1 tbsp lucuma
  • 1 tbsp mesquite
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder
  • Handful of spinach
  • 2 medjool dates, pitted**
  • 2 tbsp almond butter
  • 2 cups almond milk (500ml)
  • 1 scoop protein powder (optional)
Instructions
  1. Add your nut milk and papaya to a blender and blitz until fully combined. Add in your spinach and do the same, until there are no lumpy bits!
  2. Add in the remaining ingredients and blend for a further 1-2 minutes, making sure everything is nicely blitzed and you've got no odd lumps and pieces!
  3. Add to two glassed and top with cacao nibs! Enjoy!
Notes
*If you don't have a papaya, bananas are a good substitute. Avocados will also work but you may want to add more dates to increase the sweetness.

** If you have dried dates, you should soak them in hot water for 10 minutes to make sure they're nice and soft so that they blend well.

I made a big batch and kept some airtight in the fridge for the next morning to have on the go. It still tasted amazing, so if you're short on time you could do that!
